Following the brutal murder of a business man in Trinidad and Tobago days before his court hearing, authorities in the Twin Island Republic have decided to clamp down on the intimidation tactics used by criminals to stop witnesses from testifying against them. National Security Minister Martin Joseph says the government is in the process of passing legislation which will make statements by witnesses available for trial. This means that killing or intimidating the witnesses will no longer stop prosecution. Trinidad and Tobagos Attorney General John Jeremie is reported to have said that witnesses living as far abroad as England are terrified of testifying in Trinidadian courts, for fear of criminal action against them. Authorities believe that with this new legislation, persons will realize that providing evidence against criminals in Port of Spain, does not have to be a choice between life and death.
