Parents of a school on the West Bank of Demerara in Guyana nailed shut school doors and those of the old National Democratic Council, NDC saying they will not allow their children to attend school in the building even if it is repaired. They will also not allow furniture out of the school to any temporary building without their approval. The parents requested the new building be extended immediately.
A contingent of Police visited the area to break the barriers and allow renovation of the NDC but parents blocked the doors to both the NDC and the new school buildings.
The NDC on the West Bank of Demerara, doubled as a nursery school for area children since 1979. Over time the number of children increased and the building fell into disrepair. Parents protested the state of the building and the government belatedly built a new one in 2002. However, the school proved too small and classes had to be divided and some children returned to the old NDC building.
Several parents raised concerns with Regional Education Officer, Doodmattie Singh. The parents then identified two buildings and suggested their use until the new school is extended. However, the authorities ignored these suggestions..
