Top ranking officials in Venezuelas ministry of defense have confirmed that President Hugo Chavez does not intend to sign an anti drug accord with the United States and re-establish the ties which were severed in 2005 when Venezuela cut off cooperation with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Chavez had promised to renew the accord on different terms, but repeatedly postponed signing the deal with the DEA, which he accused of espionage, interference and imperialism. Nestor Reverol, president of the National Anti-Drug Office in Venezuela, said at a press conference that Chavez was planning to sign an anti-drug cooperation accord with Germany. Meanwhile officials from the DEA have complained that because of this lack of cooperation by Venezuelan authorities, drug trafficking from Colombia through Venezuela, was on the rise. |
