Trinidad and Tobagos Prime Minister Patrick Manning recently announced that his country would not be able to follow through on a gas deal brokered with the Jamaican government some two years. In the Memorandum of Understanding signed by former Jamaican Prime minister PJ Patterson, , Manning had promised to supply Jamaica with low-cost liquefied natural gas (LNG)to produce electricity for domestic use. But according to Trinidad and Tobagos energy Minister Arnold Pigot, Trinidad is now having problems bringing on stream a new LNG plant to produce the gas to supply Jamaica." supply constraints would not allow for supply of gas at this time" he said. Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago is in discussion with the Reublic of Venezual for shared access to a large reservoir of natural gas in the maritime area between the two countries. Argot did reveal however that if Venezuela becomes the LNG supplier to Jamaica, then Venezuela would indeed replace Trinidad and Tobago as the major supplier of energy products to Caricom.
