$5m allegedly stolen by a Nigerian governor has been traced to the Bahamas according to the head of Nigeria's anti-corruption agency.
Chairman of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, states that the authorities in Bahamas had alerted the agency about the money. The name of the governor involved was not released but he said the suspect was seeking re-election in next month's governorship elections. He said efforts are being made to recover the money. Millions of dollars in state funds are believed to have been stolen from government treasury by officials in the past. Ribadu said the majority of Nigeria's 36 state governors have been investigated for corruption and at least four have been indicted and subsequently removed from office.
The EFCC which has recovered part of this money since it was set up by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2001, has vowed to prevent corrupt politicians from contesting next month's general elections.
