Canadian High Commissioner to Jamaica says Clean up the murder rateor no foreign investment!
Monday, March 19, 2007
Denis Kingsley, the Canadian High Commissioner to Jamaica says Jamaica will continue to face a tough time attracting foreign investment if it doesnt clean up its murder rate. Speaking at a recently held meeting of the Jamaican Rotary Club, Kingsley stated that of the 200,000 Jamaican living in Canada, the level of crime and violence in Jamaica continued to be their number one concern affecting their decisions to invest or not invest in Jamaica. Citing the closeness in population between Toronto at 2.5 million and the entire population of Jamaica, Kingsley pointed out that in Toronto in 2005, there were 54 killings reported in Toronto whereas Jamaica reported a whopping 1674 for the same period. The High Commissioner pledged however, that Canada would continue to support Jamaicas attempts to cleanup its crime act through programmes such as the exchange between the Jamaican and the Canadian Police Force and other such initiatives.

Something to think about
I believe Jamaica is beautiful country. I am proud to come from jamaica. With that said I am dissapointed in my country for the condition that it is in. I have kids ages 4,6,18, and 22. Thay never been to jamaica because I am afraid it is not safe there for my family. Maybe Jamaica may need to become a commonwelth of the USA of Briten. We are not doing a good job with our independance. Just something to think about. I would hate for my country to be another satistic.

" cleaning up the crime"
Yes I understand that crime rate might increase. But as I said before people commit crimes because of ghettoiazation!! Too many poor people in one central location. For example look @ some of Toronto's neighborhoods there are lots of crimes being committed; and that's because of the housing situation. Too many poor people living together. Don't get me wrong I'm not making excuses for criminals but studies shows that people either adjust to nature. So we have to decide if it's nature (the environment in which we live) Nurture (the way we were brought up)? It's kind of hard to change when you've only been around violence and the other thing is peer pressure. Mi Nuh waa go a Jamaica Cause mi Nuh waa nobawdy shoot mi an cum rab mi wah mi nuh hav. But we really need to help. I'm glad that I got the opportunity to come to Toronto and I make full use of my opportunity.

I Agree
Frankly I dont balme the commissioner for viewing the situation the way he does. Why should anyone invest in a country that does not invest in themselves, and this is coming from a Jamaican that thinks that Jamaica is the best country in the world. However, Jamaica needs to put out more effort to solving its own problems instead relying on some one else to do it. The entire government seems as if its corrupted; after all this time we cannot seem to get of the mess that we have been in for so long. So if anything, what the Commissioner said should be motivation for Jamaica to clean up the slackness!!!! God only helps those who helps thmeselves that being said why in the world should Canada help Jamaica. Clean up yuh act Jamaica!!!!

the chance each country would be making to give more jamaican to come like say canada is that the crime will start to increase here too,its a big different in crime rate when you think about the differenst in population.

clean up
It's easy for the Commissioner to suggest that we are not coming back to Jamaica because of violence. It going to be hard to clean up Jamaica; because of ghettoization, low economy and lack of opportunity. I remember going to the Canadian embassy when I was 10 or so to get a vise and my application was denied. Give the people them an
opportunity to travel abroad and create more jobe that might help a bit.
