West Indies cricketers pulled off a stunning upset over England to win the ICC Champions Trophy at the Oval in London. The West Indies fielded first and restricted England to 217 runs all out. In reply the west Indies lost wickets rapidly but held on to a thrilling victory by 2 wickets. At 148 for 8 all seemed lost but Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw held it together to finish with a partnership of 71 runs and the victory.
The tournament included cricket giants Australia and India. Few in the cricket world expected the West Indies to make it to the 2nd round, much less to win it all. But the West Indies beat Bangladesh and South Africa to reach the semi finals. They then Beat Pakistan to reach the finals; ending a 25 year drought of a major international trophy for the Caribbean. The West Indies lost the last 7 out of the previous 8 matches played against England. But they held on to lift the spirits of a region devastated by one hurricane after another.
