Momentum is building in Santo Domingo for the launch of a US$30 million dollar campaign targeting the Dominican Republic for its enslavement of Haitian immigrants seeking refuge across its borders. The campaign is being put on by several international organizations and activist Sonia Pierre, the 2006recipient of the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Award for her work in protecting the rights of the Dominican Republics Haitian immigrants and their descendants. The Dominican Republic has for many years prohibited Haitians who were born in the Republic from attaining their papers as citizens and has a history of exploitation and discrimination towards Haitian immigrants dating back to the 18th century. The month long campaign is scheduled to commence in France this May.
