The two major trade unions in Jamaica have threatened to lock down the site of the Fiesta Hotel Project in Hanover unless a meeting is called to discuss the deplorable working conditions on the project site. This comes after a meeting between some 2000 workers and the presidents of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union and the National Workers Union Ruddy Spencer and Vincent Morrison. According to Spencer, the workers complained of the "most deplorable working conditions experienced by any group of construction workers in Jamaica. Amongst the complaints were reports of no overtime pay for weekends, absence of safety gear/equipment, monthly payment of wages instead of the usual fortnightly arrangement, and no proper lunch or bathroom facilities. Both 2 unions have been registering workers on the Fiesta site for union membership since the riot which occurred on February 27, over working conditions. The protest action resulted in several buildings on the site being set ablaze |
