Sir John MIA, St Lucia in turmoil

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Anxieties are high in St Lucia following a sudden decline in health of their Prime Minister, Sir John Compton. Minister of Health and acting Prime Minister in St Lucia, Stephenson King, has denied reports that the PM suffered a minor stroke after a recent Parliamentary sitting. King did confirm however that Compton had been hospitalized in the US after conducting a medical check up. King said that Compton stayed over in the US in compliance with advice from his doctors. The news of the PMs hospitalization comes against the backdrop of reports that he had faced a cabinet revolt that resulted in St Lucia re-establishing diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China, incensed by this set of events, has suspended ties with Castries.

Meanwhile, local constitutional lawyer, Martinus Francois has called for the appointment of a new Prime Minister in St Lucia. St Lucia is right now in a state of suspension. Let's appoint a Prime Minister and let's move on with the business of the country Francois said. The lawyer commented that it was highly unlikely that the 81 year old leader would be back in office following his hospitalization since May 7 at a facility in the US. Leader of the Opposition, Dr Kenny Anthony, has called for national unity. The former Prime Minister has urged all citizens to put aside their political differences and support each other during this period of dis-ease.
