Meanwhile in the battle between Taiwan and China for economic allies, anxieties are high in Taiwan over Belizes possible switch of allegiance from Taiwan to China. Taiwan's foreign minister James Huang is scheduled to visit Central America this week to discuss energy issues, trade and crime, sources said. This meeting comes on the heels of a recent upset for Taiwan when it bid for membership of the World Health Organisation last week. Out of Taiwan's 25 allies, just 17 rallied behind Taipei while Panama and Nicaragua were absent during the voting. Costa Rica voted against the bid. Taiwanese officials have admitted surprise at Costa Ricas action and are anxious to stall a possible domino effect that might occur amongst other Latin American nations. |
