Tensions are high in Guyana over statements made by an Official from the Guyanese army regarding the ongoing border dispute between Suriname and Guyana. The Guyana government this week rebuked the Guyana Defence Forces Coast Guard Commander, Godfrey George, for making unauthorized comments to the press. George said that the army was ready for any threat emanating from Suriname if a ruling on the border issue is in favour of his country. George further claimed that Guyana had at least four fast gunboats to deploy if Suriname should violate the UN ruling. The Government has issued an official statement declaring that the government does not recognize the military as a source of official state policy and that the comments were unauthorized. Meanwhile, Government officials in Suriname are reportedly quite concerned over the statements and are considering a diplomatic note to Georgetown seeking clarification. |
