It is still a bitter fight to keep the sweet prices the Caribbean has been getting for its cane sugar from the European Union. The Caricom Heads have decided to send a delegation to the EU to discuss how the region could keep those preferential rates the region has been obtaining for Sugar, its primary agricultural product besides bananas.
The chief Executive Officer of the Sugar Association of the Caribbean, Dr. Ian McDonald has described the EU position has hypocritical. The Association wants the EU to reconsider its proposals to cut the prices.
The removal of the EU special prices would result in the possible closure of sugar estates in the region and Guyana is expected to be hardest hit since that country depends on cane sugar as its chief foreign exchange earner and is the countrys largest employer.
