Good news for Caribbean Tourism, the United States will be temporarily relaxing its passport regulations on US citizens traveling by air to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada due to a massive backlog processing at its embassies and offices. The news was announced last week after a controversial White House bill to toughen border control and immigration laws became stalled in a heated Senate debate. Effective now until the end of September, US citizens going to the Caribbean, Mexico or Canada may do so with any form of state issued identification, as well as a form that proves they have applied for the passport. According to officials, this decision will allow the Government some time to reduce the backlog without causing to much disruption to its citizens summer travel plans. |
