Despite the postponement of the inauguration of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), some CARICOM governments will go ahead with plans to launch the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) in January. The CCJ's ceremonial inauguration has been delayed to the first quarter of 2005.
The CCJ is to have an original jurisdiction for settling disputes relating to the CSME, as well as serving as a final Appeal Court for Caricom states that have severed ties with the Privy Council in London.Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados are set to implement the CSME from January while the other Caricom nations are expected to join in 2006.
The CSME will be the subject of a special summit of Caricom leaders to be held next month in Trinidad. The discussions will focus on the core areas of the CSME, such as free movement of capital, skilled labour, goods and services throughout the Caribbean.
