In news from the Dominican Republic, a prominent doctor is under investigation by officials in Santo Domingo for claiming to have found the cure for AIDS. Dr Jose Ramon Baez Acosta, a psychiatrist and former mayor of Santo Domingo claimed in a local newspaper that he had cured 52 people of AIDS by injecting them with an unknown serum. Police raided Dr Acosta's lab after receiving complaints and seized samples of a formula apparently used for testing, medical equipment and two pigs and a donkey. Ana Cristina Nogueira, spokesperson for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has said that soaring rates of HIV infection across the Caribbean region have led to more bogus claims of a cure for AIDS. PAHO is urging health officials to track down AIDS patients who may have been hurt by Dr Acosta's serum.
