Health officials in the Caribbean and Latin America have said that dengue fever is fast reaching epidemic levels. Dengue, a mosquito borne virus that causes nausea, high fever , painful body aches, has been wreaking havoc in the region, most notably in Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua and Brazil. Puerto Rico's health department has reported more than 500 new cases weekly and had recorded 6,175 so far this year with 4 confirmed deaths. The Pan American Health Organization has logged 630,356 cases so far this year, 11 percent more than for all of 2006.
