In a bizarre in incident in Suriname, Minister of Justice and Police Chandrikapersad Santokhi was forced to jump into the Suriname river and swim to safety after the boat he was traveling threatened to sink. According to reports, the vessel started taking in water because of unusually high waves, causing an ensuing panic amongst passengers. The Minister and his security detail reportedly made the decision to help stabilize the vessel by jumping off and swimming to shore. Fishermen and a Police rescue team eventually helped tow the boat and the remaining passengers to safety.
