Dr Gary Stephens, founder of the Caribbean Heart Institute in Guyana, has made Caribbean history by performing the Institutes first open heart surgery this month, at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Stephens, who hails from the mining town of Linden, says he is very satisfied at the progress of his patient, but does not intend on performing another operation for another six weeks. Hes taking that break to go over the whole procedure, how things were done before they bring the next set of patients up for surgery and with each, they will make it shorter, Dr. Stephens explained. The recuperating patient, is also being recognized as the first Guyanese to have by pass surgery performed on him locally. There are currently thirty persons on the Institutes list awaiting their turn for the critical surgery to be performed.
